  • 07/31/08--08:33: Canadian Ice Shelf has lost a 7 square mile section (chan 1654864)

  • Evidence of global climate change seems to occur daily. According to this article scientists in Canada say new ice sheets are not reforming.

Apparently, "The sheet is the biggest piece shed by one of Canada's six ice shelves since the Ayles shelf broke loose in 2005 from the coast of Ellesmere, about 500 miles from the North Pole."

"Derek Mueller, a research at Trent University, was careful not to blame global warming, but said it the event was consistent with the theory that the current Arctic climate isn't rebuilding ice sheets. 'We're in a different climate now,' he said. 'It's not conducive to regrowing them. It's a one-way process.'"

Funny how you have to be careful about what you say.
      Great story by the way.

  • 07/31/08--08:37: McCain Ad Links Paris Hilton, Britney Spears To Obama (chan 1654864)

  • The McCain campaign is out with the latest in a string of sharply negative advertisements, this time mocking Barack Obama as a self-important celebrity along the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

In a 30-second spot that focuses absolutely zero attention on McCain himself, the Arizona Republican's campaign starts with something of a backhanded compliment for their competitor.

  • 08/04/08--22:21: Guess what? Birth control is abortion now! (chan 1654864)

  • That's right, ladies. Thanks to your buddy Bush and his band of do-gooders, the pill and emergency contraception are soon to be redefined as methods of "abortion!" And it doesn't stop there. The new proposals will ban hospitals and clinics from refusing to hire nurses and doctors who object to abortion -- in other words, you can go to the pharmacy to get birth control, but they might not let you buy it, and if they don't, tough shit for you, because they can't be reprimanded or fired!

These proposals are most likely to affect low-income or uninsured women. Because the Bush Administration always keeps it classy.

This Salon article links to a New York Times article with more facts, but I couldn't submit the url to Current, so here it is:

There was just a segment on infoMania about birth control. I think the whole thing's stupid. Laws are not about personal beliefs. Choices should be choices, not limited by the law. There's a difference between prevention and abortion. Besides, reducing birth control availability won't stop people from having sex; it just means they won't be having safe sex. Teen lovers who can't get birth control, and maybe condoms, have sex anyways, and then they have a kid. Now what are they going to do?

  • 08/04/08--23:17: Anti-rape condom (chan 1654864)

  • Rapex is a anti-rape condom worn inside of you. It has barbs on it so that if a man puts his penis in there, barbs get stuck in his penis and they are only removal by a doctor.

    Few questions:

When and how often do you actually wear this?

What if the attacker gets pissed and tries to kill you?

What if the barbs get stuck in you?

This is bad thinking, but I just want to check. Could a guy turn it inside out and THEN rape someone? It would be more painful for the victim, but it's that's what they're after.
And also, I can't imagine it would be comfortable if you turned the wrong way and stuck yourself with one of the barbs (speaking as a woman). I'm assuming that it's made some way that this won't happen. But then, is it stiff enough that it would feel like you're wearing a super super super plus tampon?
Sounds cool in theory, but I don't know how well it actually does in practice.

  • Finally, Pepsi is coming out with two "throwback" sodas with REAL SUGAR! No more aspartame and Splenda is these guys!
If for some reason you prefer being filled with chemicals and possibly experiencing health side effects, you can still buy the regular kind.

  • 07/26/10--19:34: Experience: I was with my friend when she took her own life (chan 1654864)

  • "She took the glass and drank steadily, without a tremor. She looked at me and said, "Oh, yuck" and from nowhere I replied, 'Well, they won't do as last words.'"

In this article, Chris Broughton shares the experience of a woman whose close friend chose assisted suicide to escape COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

"On a cold bright Monday in March, my friend Vicki and I took a train journey together for the very last time. During our 20-year friendship, we had travelled together a lot but, this time, when we took the train from St Pancras to Zurich, I knew I would return alone. We were on our way to the Dignitas clinic, where Vicki would die less than a week later.

Vicki was fiercely independent and saw her life as an adventure. In her younger days, she cycled across Nepal, was shipwrecked off New Zealand and extradited from America. She was also a self-taught sailor, potter and toy maker. But 10 years ago she was diagnosed with COPD, an incurable type of emphysema. She was prescribed all sorts of medication and explored alternative therapies, but the breathlessness grew worse. Her energy levels fell to almost zero.

In 2004, she joined Dignitas and asked if I would go with her when the time was right. I agreed; part of me hoped that when the time was right, she might die gently in her sleep, but that was not to be."

  • 07/26/10--23:42: Florida church to hold Quran-burning (chan 1654864)

  • Following in the tradition of bigots everywhere, a Florida church is preparing to hold a book-burning. Not just any book; the Quran.

Dove World Outreach Center is a non-denominational evangelical church in Gainesville, Florida. They have announced a special celebration of the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks . . . something that will show Christian love, reduce hatred between people of different religions, and lead toward greater understanding around the world. Or not.

Dove will host “International Burn a Quran Day” on September 11, 2010. Pastor Terry Jones says the idea came, in part, from the recent success of “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day”. He comments that “We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn,” and that burning the holy books of another religion will provide Muslims an opportunity to convert.

Jones missed the point of Everybody Draw. That event, in response to the irrational attacks (including physical assaults, attempted murder, attempted arson, and successful murder) on Western cartoonists, authors, and filmmakers who drew or otherwise criticized Muhammad, Islam’s prophet, was intended to communicate to radical Islamists that Westerners would not cave to their demands of censorship.

International Burn is not about freedom of expression. It is about hatred of Islam, not just the radical actions of some Muslims.

Jones is author of a book, Islam Is of the Devil. The book’s title reflects a sign placed outside Dove World Outreach, and explains Jones’s history working to “free souls from Islam”. He further explains how his church uses the congregation’s children as political pawns, sending them to school wearing shirts saying “Jesus is the Way” on the front, and “Islam is of the Devil” in the back.

Jones and his congregation have chosen to take an action that will not convert Muslims to Christianity. It will only serve to fan the flames of hatred, enraging even moderate Muslims.

  • 07/26/10--23:56: How would you curb distracted driving? (chan 1654864)

Dominick Blackwell Cooper asks viewers what device they would invent to cut down on distracted driving?

I doubt that we'll be able to get rid of billboards, but I agree with 2 & 4. (As far as 3 goes, there already kind of is an established age group.)

My uncle has a car that syncs with his iPhone, making calling and being called safer. While these are still distractions, he is much less likely to wreck.

      Here's my analogy:
Making protection unavailable will not make teens stop having sex. It will only encourage unprotected sex.
In the same sense, making safer technologies more readily available is our best bet. Placing an all-out ban on all distractions will not help.

If we want to keep people safe, we have to provide them will the tools to be safe.

  • 01/14/11--06:44: 13th Zodiac sign leads to mass identity crisis (chan 1654864)

  • Your zodiac sign may not actually be your zodiac sign anymore.

Astronomer Parke Kunkle says that due to changes in the Earth's alignment the dates of many zodiac signs have changed, according to NBC. In addition, there may be a 13th Zodiac sign: Ophiuchus.

Kunkle says that as the Earth and Sun slowly move the signs gradually change, as expected.

The change didn't happen over night either. The 12 signs were designated to different periods of the year almost 3,000 years ago, when astrology began, and since then the Earth's position in relation to the sun has changed.

While the sign many people were born under may now be different, it shouldn't affect horoscope readings, according to NBC.

See if your Zodiac sign has changed below.

    The New Dates:

    Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
    Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
    Pisces: March 11- April 18
    Aries: April 18 - May 13
    Taurus: May 13 - June 21
    Gemini: June 21 - July 20
    Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
    Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
    Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
    Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
    Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
    Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
    Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20
